To receive the TN Promise scholarship at a four-year college or university, students must be accepted and enrolled in an associates degree program – not a bachelor’s degree program. Students enrolling in a health sciences program will not be eligible to receive TN Promise funding until admitted into the actual program of study.
Furthermore, at a four-year institution, the TN Promise scholarship may not be last-dollar. This means tuition and mandatory fees may not be fully covered by TN Promise. The amount of funding you are eligible to receive will be based on the average amount of tuition and mandatory fees at a community college, which is estimated to be approximately $4,700 per academic year. As a last-dollar scholarship, TN Promise can cover the remaining amount after all other state and/or federal aid is applied. For example, if the average tuition and mandatory fees at a community college is $4,700 per year and you are receiving $4,500 in HOPE scholarship funds each year but no other federal and/or state aid, TN Promise would cover $200 of your tuition and mandatory fees at one of the eligible four-year institutions listed on this page.

*Dental hygiene is Tennessee State University’s only TN Promise eligible program. Students enrolling at Tennessee State University in a program other than dental hygiene will be ineligible for the TN Promise scholarship.

William R Moore College of Technology
If you attend William R Moore College of Technology, the TN Promise scholarship may not be last-dollar. This means tuition and mandatory fees may not be fully covered by TN Promise. The amount of funding you are eligible to receive will be based on the average amount of tuition and mandatory fees at a community college, which is estimated to be approximately $4,700 per academic year. As a last-dollar scholarship, TN Promise can cover the remaining amount after all other state and/or federal aid is applied. For example, if the average tuition and mandatory fees at a community college is $4,700 per year and you are receiving $4,500 in Pell Grants funds each year but no other federal and/or state aid, TN Promise would cover $200 of your tuition and mandatory fees.
Non-credit bearing programs are not TN Promise eligible, even if they are through a TN Promise eligible institution. These include WIOA or community education programs. Please confirm that your program of study is eligible for federal and state funding, including TN Promise, with the college you plan to attend prior to enrollment.

In the future, 80 percent of the fastest growing jobs in the United States will require at least some post-secondary education. By the year 2025, 55 percent of all jobs in Tennessee will require employees to have earned a post-secondary credential (certificate, associates or bachelor’s degree).

Community and technical colleges offer a less drastic change from high school than some four-year colleges. Class sizes are small and campuses are typically easier to access.

Community and technical colleges have specialized programs in areas such as welding, automotive technology, nursing, culinary arts and many others that put you on the fast track to a rewarding career.

Community colleges are a great place to take general education courses (e.g., English, math, etc.). You can complete your associates degree in two years then transfer to a four-year state school utilizing the Tennessee Transfer Pathway to complete your bachelor’s degree. This can save you approximately 50 percent in tuition as compared to directly enrolling at a four-year institution!
