Summer Institute
Hosted at select community colleges across the state, Summer Institute is a program placing students in credit-bearing and learning support courses. Successful students finish the program with college credits and eliminate the need for learning support.
Program Details
Throughout the program, students participate in all corequisite courses along with three college-level courses. If students successfully complete the program, they will earn college credits and build lasting relationships! Summer Institute provides students with the opportunity to experience college before they begin classes this fall. Students work with college professors and take college courses in a small and supported setting. Last summer, 96% of students found success in the Summer Institute!
The deadline to register is May 1, 2025. If you are planning to attend a Tennessee community college this fall, do not miss this exciting opportunity!

Complete your financial aid file! This means completing verification before the program begins, if needed.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Participating in this program could impact your future scholarship eligibility. If you withdraw from the program after the college’s withdraw date then you would become permanently ineligible for TN Promise. Likewise, all students are required to maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA at the end of each academic year. In this case, your GPA would be checked at the end of the program and if below a 2.0, you would be permanently ineligible for TN Promise.
Additionally, participating in the program will mean you will begin accessing any state and/or federal aid that you are eligible to receive (Pell Grant, TN Promise, etc.). If you are eligible for a refund from financial aid, the college will hold any excess funds to cover the cost of your books for the program. Once your books are covered, you will receive any remaining excess funds from the college. Registering for the program means you agree to these terms.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Yes! The program is free for students. We provide lunch daily and all the necessary supplies.
-
The actual college classes you will be taking will vary depending on which community college you plan to take the program at. You can reference the Program Locations and Daily Time Commitments section above for more information.
-
A corequisite course is a course that students must enroll in if they score below a college-level threshold on the ACT or placement test prior to college enrollment (college-level scores: reading/math = 19, English = 18) OR have less than a 3.6 cumulative high school GPA. Corequisite class credit hours will not count towards the number of hours needed for a student’s degree, but the student is required to take the class and pass it to be considered college level in that subject.
-
The exact courses you will take will be determined by your ACT scores and final high school transcript. If you do not need corequisite math then you will not be allowed to participate in the program as students need to require corequisite classes in reading, math and English.
-
Students who participate in the program are not required to attend a community college in the fall; however, we strongly encourage students to verify with their intended institution that any college credit earned during the program will transfer to their college of choice.
-
No. You are required to need all three corequisite courses to participate in the program.
-
Students who are currently eligible for the TN Promise scholarship at the start of the program can participate, even if they do not plan on using the scholarship in the fall, but college credits earned are not guaranteed to transfer to institutions other than Tennessee community colleges.
-
Students are only allowed a total of three absences for the duration of the program. If your summer plans exceed the three absences, this program may not be a good fit for you.
