BillionGraves

Ongoing state-wide opportunity!

Take photos of gravestones with the BillionGraves app on your smartphone to help preserve precious history. Each photo you take is automatically tagged with GPS coordinates, allowing the gravestones to be plotted on a map. The names and dates are then transcribed and made available for families around the world who are searching for their ancestors.

You will be credited with 1 hour for every 250 photos you take with the BillionGraves app. That is about 1 photo every 15 seconds. The app will automatically keep track of the number of photos you take.

You are welcome to do this at your own convenience and you do not need permission from us to begin. Click HERE to get started.

If you have any questions, feel free to email us at Volunteer@BillionGraves.com We’ll be happy to help you!

When you are finished, request verification by clicking on this link: https://support.billiongraves.com/support/tickets/new. Include your name, county, cemetery, and the email address that you use to login to BillionGraves. You will typically receive a reply within 3 - 5 business days.

Veterans Museum

In 1942, the Army Air Corps built the largest WWII training base in Tennessee, the Dyersburg Army Air Base (DAAB), near Halls, Tennessee.  It was at this base where 7,700 B-17 Crewmen received their last stateside training.  Men came from all over the United States to become a part of a 10-man crew and learn to rely on the Norden Bombsite to accurately bomb the target as they practiced high altitude bombing on ranges on each side of the Mississippi River.

Seventy-one B-17s were domiciled at Halls and fifty training missions were flown daily, which included day and night sorties.  As lumbering B-17s filled the sky, area farmers reported that hens quit laying eggs and cows quit giving milk.  One hundred fifteen crewmen lost their lives in air crashes.  According to records, not one resident was killed or injured as a result of the tragedies, but area residents tell of helping the injured and driving them to the Base.

The Base was closed at the end of 1945.

We are dedicated to preserving the memories of the Dyersburg Army Air Base and the impact it had on Dyer, Lauderdale, Tipton, and Lake Counties.

We would use volunteers to help with general clean up, events, and even if they wanted to volunteer on the weekends to be docents would be beneficial. We usually have an event each Spring for children and volunteers are really necessary during this event.

National Public Lands Day Hikes

In honor of National Public Lands Day, Tennessee State Parks, Friends Groups and Tennessee State Natural Areas are hosting a variety of volunteer stewardship projects, hikes and interpretive programs for all ages. This year, we have a variety of events and service projects planned, including litter clean-ups, trail maintenance, hikes and even a few canoe floats. Events are being held at different times throughout the day and some parks are having multiple events.
