Earn Nine College Credits Before Fall Semester Begins

The tnAchieves Summer Institute is a free, six-week academic program hosted exclusively at Southwest Tennessee Community College. Designed for TN Promise students who are not currently testing into college-level courses based on ACT scores, this program provides the structure, support, and instruction students need to start college confident and prepared.

Students who successfully complete Summer Institute earn nine college credits and begin the fall semester with real momentum.

  • Dates: June 1 – July 10
    Schedule: Monday–Thursday: 9:00 AM–3:00 PM; Friday: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM

    Students attend classes on the Southwest Tennessee Community College Whitehaven campus and must commit to the full six-week program.

  • To participate in Summer Institute, students must:

    1. Be eligible for the TN Promise scholarship.

    2. Require corequisite courses in reading, math, AND English.
      This means scoring below an 18 on the ACT in English AND below a 19 on the ACT in both reading and math.

    3. Commit to the entire six-week program.
      Attendance is required. Because students are enrolled in college courses, repeated absences are not permitted.

    4. Graduate from a high school in Shelby County.

    Important Deadlines

    By May 15, 2026, students must:

    • Register for Summer Institute at tnAchieves.org/institute

    • Apply to Southwest Tennessee Community College for the Summer 2026 term

    • Complete all admissions requirements, including submitting a high school transcript

    By May 29, 2026, students must:

    • Attend a mandatory orientation session

    • Complete any remaining financial aid requirements

IMPORTANT NOTE

Additionally, participating in the program will mean you will begin accessing any state and/or federal aid that you are eligible to receive (Pell Grant, TN Promise, etc.). If you are eligible for a refund from financial aid, the college will hold any excess funds to cover the cost of your books for the program. Once your books are covered, you will receive any remaining excess funds from the college. Registering for the program means you agree to these terms.

What is the tnAchieves Summer Institute?

Who is Summer Institute designed for?

What are the eligibility requirements?
Students must be eligible for TN Promise, graduate from a Shelby County high school, plan to attend Southwest Tennessee Community College, and require corequisite courses in reading, math, and English. This means scoring below an 18 on the ACT in English AND below a 19 on the ACT in reading and math.

Is Summer Institute required?
No. Participation is optional, but it is a strong opportunity for students who want added support and a head start in college.

Where is Summer Institute hosted?
Summer Institute is hosted only at Southwest Tennessee Community College. Students must attend in person on the campus indicated by the program details on the registration page.

When does the program take place?
June 1 – July 10
Monday–Thursday: 9:00 AM–3:00 PM
Friday: 9:00 AM–12:00 PM

Is attendance required?
Yes. Students must commit to the full six-week program. Because students are enrolled in college courses, repeated absences are not permitted and may result in removal from the program.

What will students do during the program?
Students complete corequisite support courses in reading, English, and math and earn credit for college-level courses (Academic Success, English, and Math). Students also receive ongoing tutoring and mentorship.

Do students earn college credit?
Yes. Summer Institute is credit-bearing. Students who successfully complete the program earn nine college credits.

Are grades earned? Will this appear on a college transcript?
Yes. Summer Institute courses are college courses. Students earn grades, and coursework and credits appear on a college transcript.

What does “corequisite” mean?
Corequisite courses are extra support courses in math or English that some students are required to take alongside college-level classes. These courses are designed to help students succeed, but they can add time to a college schedule.

What if I only need one or two corequisite courses?
Students must require corequisite courses in reading, math, and English to participate. Students who only require one or two corequisite courses are not eligible for Summer Institute.

What if I am completing SAILS Math?
Students who do not require corequisite math are not eligible for Summer Institute, because the program requires enrollment in all three subject areas.

Is the program free?
Yes. Summer Institute is free for eligible TN Promise students. Free lunch is provided daily.

Is transportation provided?
Students are responsible for transportation to and from campus each day.

Is housing provided?
No. Summer Institute is an in-person, commuter program. Students must travel to campus daily.

What should students bring each day?
Students should bring any requested class materials and be prepared to participate in a structured college-day schedule. Additional details and expectations will be shared during orientation.

Is there an orientation?
Yes. Students must attend a mandatory orientation session by May 29, 2026. Orientation details will be communicated after registration.

  • Register for Summer Institute

  • Apply to Southwest Tennessee Community College for the Summer 2026 term

  • Complete all admissions requirements, including submitting a high school transcript

Do I have to complete the FAFSA?
Yes. Students should complete the FAFSA and finish any follow-up financial aid requirements as part of the required steps for participation.

When does registration open and close?
Registration opens March 9, 2026 and closes May 15, 2026. Space is limited.

What if I register but later decide I cannot attend?
Students should notify tnAchieves as soon as possible so the spot can be offered to another student.
